Smartwatch or sports watch: which one fits your day?
One wants charging every night, the other lasts for weeks. Here is how to decide between a smartwatch and a GPS sports watch.
Smartwatches and sports watches look similar on the shelf, but they are built for different days. The right one depends on how you balance notifications, apps and training.
Smartwatches: your phone, on your wrist
An Apple Watch or a Galaxy Watch is best for messages, calls, payments, maps and a huge range of apps. The trade-off is battery life, which usually means charging every day or two.
Sports watches: built around training
Garmin and other sports watches focus on accurate GPS, training plans, recovery and battery life measured in days or weeks. Their smart features are simpler, and that is often the point.
Questions that settle it
- Do you train for races or long events? A sports watch will track it better and last the distance.
- Do you mainly want notifications and payments? A smartwatch does those best.
- Which phone do you use? Apple Watch only works with iPhone. Galaxy Watch works best with Galaxy phones and pairs with most Android phones.
Get the size right
A watch that is too large slides around and reads heart rate less reliably. If you are between sizes, the smaller case is usually more comfortable for sleep tracking. And if you guess wrong, we swap sizes for free within 30 days.
