Phone battery care: the habits that actually help
Every battery wears out slowly. These simple habits slow that down without making your phone harder to live with.
Every phone battery loses capacity over time. That is chemistry, not a fault. The good news is that a few easy habits make a real difference to how quickly it happens.
Heat is the real enemy
High temperatures age a battery faster than anything else. Avoid leaving your phone on a sunny dashboard, gaming while it charges under a pillow, or charging it inside a thick case on a hot day.
Let your phone manage overnight charging
Most current phones can pause charging at around 80 percent and finish just before you usually unplug. Turn on the optimized or adaptive charging option in your battery settings and leave it on.
You do not need to drain it to zero
Full discharges were advice for older battery types. Modern lithium-ion cells are happiest kept roughly between 20 and 80 percent, topped up whenever it suits you.
Use a good charger and cable
Fast charging is safe when the charger and cable are certified for your phone. Very cheap, uncertified chargers are where problems start.
Know when it is time for a new battery
- Battery health below about 80 percent in your settings.
- The phone shuts down with charge still showing.
- The battery looks swollen or the screen lifts. Stop using it and bring it in.
