Noise-cancelling headphones, explained without the jargon
How noise cancelling works, what it can and cannot block out, and how to choose between over-ear headphones and earbuds.
Noise cancelling has gone from a frequent-flyer luxury to something most people use on the way to work. Here is what it actually does, and what to look for.
How it works
Small microphones listen to the sound around you, and the headphones play back an opposite wave that cancels it out. It works best on steady, low sounds like engines, air conditioning and road noise.
What it cannot block
Sudden or high-pitched sounds, like voices and clattering cups, are harder to cancel. A good seal does a lot of that work, which is why fit matters as much as the technology.
Over-ear or earbuds?
- Over-ear headphones usually cancel more noise, last longer and are more comfortable on long flights.
- Earbuds fit in a pocket, are better for the gym and are easier to wear with glasses or a hat.
Do not forget call quality
If you take calls on the move, look for multiple microphones and wind reduction. Our specialists can tell you which models sound clear on the other end, not just in your ears.
